  • The inaugural International Day of Forests took place on March 21, 2013, marking the commencement of global recognition for the vital role of forests.
  • Annually, the world loses over 13 million hectares (32 million acres) of forests, highlighting the urgent need for concerted action to combat deforestation and preserve these vital ecosystems.
  • The idea of World Forestry Day was proposed in 1971 by the General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture. March 21 was chosen by the United Nations as it aligns with the Vernal Equinox and Autumn Equinox in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively.
  • The theme for International Day of Forests 2024 is Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.
