  • Retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu have been appointed as the new Election Commissioners.
  • The new commissioners were selected by a three-member committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprising Union Home Minister Amit Shah and leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
  • Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, a retired IAS officer of Uttarakhand cadre, was earlier the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand and served as the Secretary of Lokpal on a contract basis. He has also held positions such as the Chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and served in the Ministry of Education.
  • The Election Commission may soon announce the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are expected to be held in April-May 2024.
