Majuli in Assam has been awarded the prestigious GI tag for its traditional arts of Mukha Xilpo (mask-making) and Manuscript Paintings, recognizing the deep cultural heritage and historical significance associated with these folk crafts.
Mukha Xilpo, originating from the 1500s and introduced by Saint Sankardeva, holds profound cultural significance in Assam, embodying various characters, emotions, and themes of Vaisnavism. Similarly, Manuscript Paintings depict Hindu epic tales, particularly Lord Krishna’s Bhagavata Purana narratives, showcasing artistic finesse and cultural heritage.
The GI tag not only acknowledges the skills of Majuli's artisans but also provides protection to their rich artistic legacy. This recognition ensures the preservation and promotion of traditional art forms, safeguarding them for future generations.
