The "Maratha Military Scenario of India" will be India's nomination for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage List for the year 2024-25. The nomination has twelve component parts – Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohagarh, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgarh, Pratapgarh, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijay Durg, Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu. Spread over diverse geographical conditions and regions, these factors reflect the strategic military might of the Maratha regime.
The Maratha military landscape of India, which developed between the 17th and 19th centuries, represents an extraordinary fortification and military system envisaged by the then Maratha rulers. This extraordinary system of forts is the result of integrating landscape, terrain and geographical features specific to the Sahyadri mountain ranges, the Konkan coast, the Deccan plateau and the Eastern Ghats in the Indian peninsula, varying in hierarchy, scale and symbolic classification features.
Of the over 390 existing forts in Maharashtra, only 12 have been selected under the Maratha military scenario of India and eight of these forts are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
